The Deaf Institute is undoubtedly one of Manchester’s greatest gig venues. It can also lay claim to being one of the city’s hippest, hottest bars. Housed in a Grade II listed building that’s as old as the hills – or as old as 1878, at any rate – the Deaf Institute is just a stone’s throw from Oxford Road, situated on the campus of Manchester Metropolitan University. Run by the same folk behind Trof Northern Quarter, the venue is known for many things: shabby-chic decor; a vast selection of draught ales, craft beers and cocktails and a wonderful dome-shaped music hall. The latter space benefits from excellent acoustics and has played host to the UK’s best and brightest since the venue reopened in 2008. If it’s food you’re after, just descend the staircase and choose from a concise menu offering top-notch gastropub grub. The Deaf Institute also hosts regular club nights, with various drinks promotions and a resident DJ spinning dance floor anthems. Indeed, there’s something popping off most nights, whether it’s an open mic session or a team quiz. If good food, booze and live music sound up your street, keep your ear to the ground and proceed immediately to The Deaf Institute.
